The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) sets the daily USD/CNY reference rate at around 01:15 GMT (21:15 US Eastern time). This fixing remains one of the most closely watched signals in Asian foreign exchange markets for forex traders.

China uses a managed floating exchange rate system, where the renminbi (yuan) is allowed to trade within a specific band around a central reference rate, or midpoint, set daily by the PBOC. Currently, the currency may fluctuate plus or minus 2% from this official midpoint during onshore trading hours.

Each morning, the PBOC determines the midpoint using multiple factors. These include the previous day’s closing price, movements in major currencies—especially the US dollar—broader international FX conditions, and domestic economic considerations such as capital flows, economic growth momentum, and financial stability objectives. The midpoint is not calculated purely mechanically, which means policymakers have discretion to influence market expectations.

After the midpoint is announced, onshore USD/CNY can trade freely within the permitted band. If market pressures push the yuan close to either edge of this range, the central bank may intervene to reduce volatility. Interventions may include direct buying or selling of yuan, adjusting liquidity conditions, or issuing guidance through state-owned banks.

Consequently, the daily fixing is often seen as a policy signal rather than just a technical benchmark. A stronger-than-expected CNY midpoint generally suggests the PBOC is resisting depreciation pressures. Conversely, a weaker fixing indicates tolerance for a softer currency, often reflecting dollar strength or challenges in the domestic economy.

During periods of heightened global volatility—such as changes in US interest rate expectations, trade tensions, or capital flow pressures—the fixing carries even greater significance. For investors and forex traders, it offers valuable insight into China’s currency management priorities, balancing competitiveness, capital stability, and confidence in financial markets.
